A Portacool Cyclone 130 evaporative cooler — it pulls air through a wet media pad and blows it out cooler, which works far better than a plain fan in dry Texas heat. Effective over about 700 square feet, or roughly eight people. The centrifugal fan is noticeably quieter than a big drum fan, so guests can still hold a conversation. Fill the 16-gallon reservoir by hand or hook it to a garden hose and leave it running all day.
